Error #1: Not Seeing the Big Picture

Lay the groundwork for your call to action

Before your banner stand viewer recognizes that they should do something, they have to see the need for it. You'll need to lay the groundwork in the advertisement. A crude example of this tactic can be seen in skin care ads: "Feeling old? Skin getting saggy? Not bouncing back like you used to? - Buy Ridiculously Expensive Facial Cream today!" Although we know your ad will be much more subtle.

Limit your number of calls to action

Think about your viewing distance and speed

Life as a road warrior has its benefits and, well frankly, its challenges. Part of my job is going to trade shows across North America, and that means travel throughout the year. Over the years, I’ve learned a few things about how to get the most out of these trips (and welcome tips from any of you).

Here are my five best suggestions to date:

1. Prepare in advance. Get your show in order before you get to the show. Check out your banners, banner stands, table covers and displays, pamphlets, cards. Keep a check list and go over it in advance of the show. Key: Restock anything as soon as possible when you return. This saves a lot of last-minute hassle and possible lack of materials.

2. Travel as lightly as possible. Go for the optimum blend of sturdy, light-weight, quality, easy-to-transport materials in the first place. The last thing you need is for your retractable banner stand to break or your banners to curl. You’ll have a lot more energy for customers if you are not fighting with your equipment.

3. Arrive early enough to get oriented. If possible, I arrive the afternoon (not the night) before so that I can get over any jet lag, stretch my legs, eat decently, plus get a good night’s rest. This puts me in optimum shape for the next day(s) of the show. If possible, I even add on some time so I can enjoy stuff outside the trade show in my free time. (Okay, maybe not as often as I hope!)

5. Connect with others. The real energy comes from connecting with the trade show visitors and other vendors. I know that when I am well rested and nourished, I have a lot more zest and attention to offer those who stop by. I also make a point of making at least one new friend from among the other vendors. When my wife and I opened our restaurant three years ago we came up with an idea that would increase our business as well as help our community. Once a week we would use a customer’s own recipe for the daily special and name it after that customer. I own a large farm outside of Nashville, Tennessee. It became a fairly common thing for people to drop off animals at the entrance of my long driveway that leads up to my house. So I figured if I was going to take care of these animals I would build a kennel for them. I quickly became the keeper of every stray dog and cat in a 20-mile radius. I made my farm a no-kill shelter and began adopting these dogs and cats out to well deserving and loving homes. The problem was, I had to get the word out. I began with ordering several portable banner stands that had pictures of actual animals that had come into my shelter and then placed them in malls, shopping centers, and anywhere people gathered.

I had been dating my girlfriend for three years and decided it was time to pop the question. I wanted to do something so unique and special that she would always have that memory to look back on for the rest of our lives. Little did I know at the time, my method of proposing marriage to my girlfriend would turn into a very lucrative and fulfilling business.
